For the first time in 360 years, Dutch Marines are flying a foreign flag

Original version ·

The Netherlands Marine Corps just did something that hasn't happened since the 17th century.

So, the Netherlands Marine Corps, which has been around since 1665, decided to break its own 360-year-old streak. During a joint performance with the Ukrainian Ground Forces Military Orchestra in Rotterdam, they raised the Ukrainian flag over their base.

It wasn't some boring diplomatic formality. The base commander officially announced it as a show of solidarity. It turns out, when you bring a military band to Europe, you don't just get applause—you get a piece of history rewritten.

A tradition that survived three centuries finally met its match in a brass section from Kyiv. Some rules are clearly meant to be broken when the company is good enough.
