Russian drone swarm intensity has spiked, causing 36% more damage to Ukrenergo

Original version ·

It is officially harder to keep the lights on as Russia upgrades its tactical approach from a handful of drones to massive saturation swarms.

Back in the day, a standard attack involved three or four drones. Now, Russia is tossing 20 to 25 of them at a single energy target in one go. It is a deliberate strategy to break generation and transmission at the same time.

The result is a 36% jump in damage compared to last year. We are talking about half of our total power generation capacity gone, and the financial impact on Ukrenergo is already nearing 90 billion hryvnias. The numbers are grim: millions of people sitting in the dark, with a record spike hitting over 12 million consumers at once back in February.

We are essentially funding the survival of the grid through necessity, and honestly, the math on how many billions we need to rebuild sounds like a drop in the ocean compared to the physical reality of the damage.

The scale is insane. How are we supposed to build new generation when they just turn it into scrap metal for free?
+6 solidA grim observation on the economics of destruction; it is hard to build a future when your assets are being recycled into scrap by drones
